  1. Toss away the trash

Spend 10-15 minutes on a weekly or even a fortnightly basis to go through everything that’s on top of your desk, drawers and filing cabinet. Be ruthless and only keep what you absolutely need.

If you want to transform your tidying and decluttering routine, then ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up’ by Marie Kondo is an essential read. Her tips are very straight forward, but very effective. Pick up a belonging and if it sparks joy, then keep it, if not, thank it for its service and let it go.

Whilst a notebook, file or an analytics report will likely not spark joy, instead, you can ask yourself, does this aid my day to day working life? Is this essential for me to reach a deadline? Or, is this something that I need, but don’t use regularly? If so, either bin it or safely stow away for later use.

The same technique can be used for clearing your computer files and laptop desktop. Go through each folder and clear out any screengrabs or old files that no longer aid or serve your work goals.

  1. File loose papers

In a digital era, there’s no excuse for keeping reams of loose papers and files on your desk. If you can’t keep most of your work files online, then minimise the amount of print outs and paper documents on your desk.

Using a desktray or an upright file holder is a pretty obvious solution, keeping everything within reach, but at least it’s organised and takes up minimal space. Label each tray or file holder, so you can easily scan across and find what you need and recycle anything that’s left over.

  1. Jam Jar Upcycling

Before you throw away any old jam jars, give them a new lease of life and a new purpose, by upcycling and using them as pen and pencil holders. A very simple idea, that will give your work space a vintage aesthetic, whilst serving as a handy way to keep your writing implements safely and securely stored.

Keep unusually shaped jars at varying heights, to create a cool, crafty look and use a label maker to further ramp up the hipster vibes. Add colour and creativity, by using plain or metallic paints in solid colours or to add unique prints and patterns.

  1. Use up every inch of space

Once your desk is tidy, organised and clutter free, take a look at your entire work area and re-evaluate your space.

Raumplus are market leaders when it comes to transforming your home office with cleverly crafted storage that uses up every inch of space. Your desk can be built in to your bedroom wardrobe, with the ability to tuck your chair underneath and conceal behind beautifully designed sliding doors, that glide across seamlessly. Every element can be customised, from the drawer and desk space, to the colour and finish of the interior and exterior.

  1. Clear your cables

There’s nothing more unsightly than lots of tangled up cables cluttering your desk. Unfortunately, it’s an unwelcome side effect of living in a tech and digitally driven world.

Use the common bulldog clip, attach to the edge of your desk and thread through each cable. You can label each clip, if you feel like being ultra organised. Or if you prefer putting them completely out of sight and out of mind, then why not DIY a board to hide all cables at the very back of your desk. Off Grid Quest have a step by step guide on how to create and customise a backboard that’s a very inexpensive way of concealing all your cables and leads.
